She was happy when their first night at the homestead passed without incident. Though with every hour that drew them closer to the next night, she felt her trepidation growing. It felt like they were waiting for something that may or may not happen, though she knew it was a near certainty. There are little corners of paradise that couldn’t last forever. Eventually, someone would discover them and try to take what was theirs. It was a different question altogether if they were approached by people simply looking for a sanctuary.

While there was plenty of timber and land to build another dwelling, it would take away resources from the homestead that they couldn’t afford to lose. Even working with the villagers, it was going to be tight. She wanted to make sure there was enough to get them all through the winter before agreeing to anyone else being on the property. Her father, though, a kind man with a good heart, had already voiced his willingness to take in anyone the villagers deemed safe who crossed through. She knew she was going to have to have a conversation with him if they were going to coexist without problems.

So much time had passed since she had a relationship with her father. The lie that she’d told all those years ago still loomed in the air around them. She didn’t care, though; the secret wasn’t hers to tell, and it would go to the grave with her. As she emerged onto the porch and smiled at Theo, who was keeping watch, Beth thought about everything that still needed to be done. They only had about an hour of daylight left. Danielle and Emily were busy whipping up dinner while Beth tried to wake herself up after a catnap. She’d already decided to take the evening shift on the porch.

Theo was a quiet boy and hardworking, but she knew he needed some sleep as well. Moving to sit down, she instructed him to go inside and get some dinner and sleep as she settled into a rocking chair. Her father had gone into town several hours before to barter with a few of the locals. Now, she saw him walking back toward the gate. Instantly, she knew something was wrong. His cheeks were flushed with rage. Instantly, she was on her feet.

“What’s wrong?” Beth asked.

“Go get your sister. Tell the others we need to talk, just me and my daughters,” he growled.

Beth wanted to know what was happening, but the look in his eyes told her not to argue. Instantly, she went inside and got her sister, telling the others they would be back shortly. When they emerged again, Neil was pacing back and forth in the front yard. He glared at them when he saw them come out but didn’t stop walking.

“I just had a really interesting talk with Marvin Smith. Does that name ring any bells to you?” he asked Beth.

Her stomach dropped as she nodded.

“Funny thing about the nation being in a state of war.
